AN OUTLINE OF SCANDINAVIAN URBANISMABF115
Credits: 6. Grading scale: UG. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Architecture. Language of instruction: The course will be given in English. Optional for: A4. Course coordinator: Professor Mats Edström, Mats.Edstrom@byggark.lth.se, Architecture and Restoration. Prerequisites: Bachelor degree or three years of approved fulltime studies at university level in architecture, landscape architecture, design, urban planning, buildning antiquarian sciences or the equivalent. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 10. Assessment: During the course, constant reference is made to individuals’ levels of knowledge: each gives a preliminary account of his or her work-in-process on a project that is assessed. At the end of the course, each gives in words, drawings and images a final account of this project that the other students assess critically. Successfully to complete the course, a student must attend not less than eighty per cent of the lectures and study visits; actively take part in preliminary and final assessments; and gain approval for his or her project. Contents
Emphasing 20 and 21th-century urbanism, the course comprises lectures and seminars, as well as excursions in Denmark and Sweden. It mediates knowledge, training and understanding of giving form to the encounter between new and old urban architecture and focuses in particular on the functions, construction, material, administration and renewal of buildings. Training is given in how buildings are adapted to contemporary demands on functions, technical equipment, form and access by the physically handicapped.
