Aim
The course aims at giving the student
- a basic understanding of the foundations of quantum mechanics and molecular spectroscopy.
- knowledge of the principal spectroscopic methods for studying molecular structure and dynamics.
- practical experience of some of these methods.
- a foundation for critical reading of the research literature describing applications of molecular spectroscopy.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- have a basic knowledge of the quantum mechanical foundations of molecular spectroscopy.
- be familiar with the most common methods in optical spectroscopy and what molecular properties can be studied with each method.
- have knowledge of the function and properties of the laser.
Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to evaluate spectroscopic data and calculate molecular properties from these.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to assess critically the research literature describing applications of molecular spectroscopy.
Contents
The course comprises two parts. The first part outlines a basic and general quantum mechanical description of molecular spectroscopy, including the interaction between radiation and matter, with examples of basic applications of optical (IR, UV/VIS, and fluorescence) spectroscopy. The second part treats modern spectroscopic techniques.
