MECHANICS OF MATERIALSVSMA10

Higher education credits: 3. Grading scale: TH. Level: G1 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VSMA10 overlap following cours/es: FME602 och FME602. Compulsory for: IBYI2, IBYV2. Course coordinator: Universitetslektor Susanne Heyden, susanne.heyden@byggmek.lth.se, Byggnadskonstruktionslära. Assessment: One hand-in assignment and written examination. Home page: http://www.bkl.lth.se/utbildning/kurser/.

Aim
The aim of the course is to give an introduction to mechanics of materials with application to simple types of structures that are common in buildings and infrastructure.

The course is intended as basic general knowledge for a BSc in Civil Engineering and to give necessary prerequisites for further studies in geotechnical engineering and structural mechanics.

Contents
The course includes fundamental parts of classical non-deformable, deformable structural elements and classical strength theory of materials.

Classical non-deformable structural elements include trusses. Formulation of equilibrium between external and internal forces is fundamental.

For deformable structural elements deformation relations are added. This makes a general analysis of structurally indeterminate structures possible. This will be applied on simple bar structures and two-dimensional stress states.
