Aim
The aim of the course is for the students to acquire an understanding of and insight into how design management should be integrated into a company’s overall management responsibilities, specifically in its development function. Since design management deals with both design issues and more traditional product development and engineering design issues, the focus of the course is on methods and techniques that are of a generic nature and that can be applied to strategic as well as tactical and operative levels in all areas.

Contents
In order to achieve the aim of the course, it is necessary to deal with a relatively large number of areas of highly different natures, but that all contribute to the overall goal. Concretely, we have chosen to treat the following:

Design Management – seen from an overall company perspective. This defines the main contents of the course. This section deals with the following types of questions: What is design? How can you control the design process? How do you accomplish product benchmarking?

Technology Foresight – aims to provide insights into and knowledge of technological visions and aids as technology roadmaps and similar methods in order to predict and plan future development.

Intellectual Property Rights – deals with basic insights into patent, design registration and protection, and trademarks.

Industrial Marketing – completes the course and aims for an advanced understanding of marketing from an industrial perspective.

Parts

Code: 0108. Name: Project.
Higher education credits: 4. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: For a passing grade the student must receive between 25 - 50 points on the project. Each student is credited with the total number of points for the project. Contents: A project is carried out in industry or in a fictitious company. The goal is to study how design management, as interpreted in the course, is practically dealt with in the industry. If it is not possible to procure a host comapany, the project will be carried out in a fictitious company. The project is carried out in groups of 3 - 5 students and the results are presented in a joint report by the group.

Code: 0208. Name: Written Examination.
Higher education credits: 3,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: For a passing grade the student must receive between 25 - 50 points on the written examination. Contents: The examination is a means of checking the individual student's aquisition of the theoretical knowledge presented in the course.
