Aim
The objective of the course is to demonstrate the relationship between material, properties and manufacturing, and how this influences design and use of products of different materials.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- be familiar with different types of materials and their processing
- be aware of the relationships between structure and properties of materials.
- be aware of different materials´ impact on the environment during production, use, and destruction.
Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must
- demonstrate the ability to analyse and discuss material problems and solutions.
- demonstrate the ability to make a material selection for a product.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to discuss a material selection from different view points, e.g. technical, environmental, aesthetic, financial.
Contents
Basics of materials science. Atoms as buildings blocks, plastic deformation, diffusion, state diagrams, phase changes, corrosion, fatigue, fractures and visco-elasticity applied to types of steels, aluminium alloys, ceramics, plastics and composite materials.
