Syllabus academic year 2009/2010
(Created 2009-08-11.)
PHYSICSFAFF25

Higher education credits: 11. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Compulsory for: C3, D3. Course coordinator: Lars Engström, lars.engstrom@fysik.lth.se, Fysik, kurslaboratoriet. Recommended prerequisits: Basic courses in mathematics. Assessment: Written examinations (3 + 5 hp). Completed projects (3 hp) and laboratory work. Parts: 3. Home page: http://kurslab.fysik.lth.se/CDFysik/Index.htm.

Aim
The course will give a basic understanding of thermodynamics and an introduction to photonics, including optics and signal transfer by light- and radio waves. Many of the concepts introduced are of importance for a deeper understanding of contemporary technology areas, e.g. data communication. The course should also give training in scientific problem-solving techniques and physical modeling, as well as written and oral communication. The projects fall within the area energy-, climat- and combustion-research.

Contents
Thermodynamics (3 hp)
Heat and phase transititons. State equations for ideal and real gases. Kinetic gas theory and Maxwell-Bolzman distribution. The main laws of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic processes. Heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. Basic combustion. The relevans of heat radiation for simple climat models.

Photonics (5 hp)
Optics and electromagnetic waves, refraction, reflection, interfernce and diffraction. Geometric optics. Resolution. Optical fibers, light sources and detectors.

Projects (3 hp)
The students work in groups of 2-4 on projects that fall within the area energy-, climat- and combustion-research of relevance to “sustainable development”, “sustainable consumption and production”, “environment and climate”, and “global development”. A basic understanding and knowledge in these fields is important for the development of a sustainable society. Each project shall include a written report and an oral presentation for a student audience. A part of the work consists in critically examining one other project.
