INTRODUCTORY COURSE IN CHINESE FOR ENGINEERS, PART 2

Higher education credits: 15. Grading scale: UG. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in English. Compulsory for: C3, D3, E3. Course coordinator: Marita Ljungqvist, Marita.Ljungqvist@ostas.lu.se, Kinesiska. Prerequisites: EXTA35. Assessment: Continuous written and oral tests, attendence (minimum 75%), active class participation, final exam. Tests, attendence and class participation count toward 20% of the final assessment. Upon returning to Sweden, the student must hand in a course certificate from Zhejiang University to receive his/her final grade. Further information: The course is given at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Only one assessment opportunity for each part of the course is offered in China. Students that participate but do not pass the course in China are offered a re-take exam in a course with similar content at Lund Unviersity. Home page: http://www.sol.lu.se/kinesiska/.

Aim

to give sufficient written and oral skills in Standard Mandarin for the student to easily cope with every-day situations in China.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to define and exemplify a large portion of the basic patterns in the syntax of Standard Mandarin.
be familiar with the structure of the Chinese character system

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to use basic grammatical constructs of Standard Mandarin in both speech and writing.
be able to understand and relate simple written texts in Chinese based on the vocabulary presented in the course.
be able to participate in conversation around everyday situations in Standard Mandarin.
master a vocabulary of frequent words and expressions in Standard Mandarin.
be able to give simple presentations in Standard Mandarin.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to give perspectives on Chinese socity and compare it to Swedish circumstances.

Contents
The course studies Standard Mandarin grammar, vocabulary, and character system (about 60%) as well as oral skills (about 40%). The study material largely consists of elementary factual prose.
