Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: UG. Level: G1 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Compulsory for: IBYA2. Course coordinator: PhD Gunnar Sandin, gunnar.sandin@arkitektur.lth.se, Inst för arkitektur och byggd miljö. Assessment: The individual student can either Pass or Fail. Students individually are examined on the course on the basis of the results they hand in that a group of students and their teachers scrutinizes and discusses. To achieve a Pass the individual student must have submitted material that is so approved and taken part in the scrutiny of other students’ material. In addition he or she shall have at least an eighty per cent active attendance at seminars and lectures. Aim
The course aims to make clear the possibilities of both the finer points of visual communication and a method of using it to generate ideas and resolve problems. It aims too to enlarge skills in and perceptions about visual communication. A further aim is to clarify how images can mediate information and how communication is affected by the interpretation. The course offers a programme of working with hand-drawn and computer-based images.

Contents
The course includes exercises in creative architectural gestalt work, three-dimensional digital modelling of buildings, graphical layouts, digital manipulation of images, drawing coloration and visual communication using posters including images, drawings and texts. The exercises give student individually first-hand opportunities of developing layouts and ideas and making them visible. Lectures give the theoretical background and an introduction to the exercises. Students’ abilities to make assessments and formulate their thoughts about images are stimulated in a final survey.
