ARCHITECTURE FOR ENGINEERS

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Optional for: V4. Recommended prerequisits: Completion of two years of civil engineering studies. The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 10. The number of participants is limited to 50 Assessment: For a passing grade the student must attend at least 80% of all lectures, seminars and study visits. Aim
The aim of the course is for engineers to gain insight into the architect's work in order to better cooperate and communicate with them in the building process. It will provide knowledge and understanding of the architects working methods and range of activities, as well as a short history of trends in architecture and particularly in housing construction from the beginning of the 1900 to the present. Several of the classes begin with a lecture and conclude with a seminar discussion on the literature assignments.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to analyse and understand the aesthetics and functional qualities of buildings.
be able to examine and evaluate the architects motivation and intentions.
be able to identify and discuss the housing design requirements of different user groups.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to suggest technological solutions for a building with understanding and respect for the architects intentions.
be able to constructively cooperate with architects in construction projects.
be able to discuss buildings from a technical and architectural perspective.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

become avare of the importance of mutual understanding between engineers and architects.

Contents
Presentation of the intentions and points of departure architects have in project planning and construction. The lectures, seminars and exercises describe and analyse the qualities that architects want to achieve in buildings. Students will be given a brief introduction to some of the architects tools blueprints, models and programs. In a guided tour of Lund, the students will visit public buildings constructed in the last decade. Alternatively, a study tour will be made to modern housing estates and new official buildings in Skåne. The course includes two exercises: construction of a model of a building of architectural-historical interest (e.g. famous architects homes) and the design of a dream home in a fictitious location.
