MATERIAL, SHAPE AND FORCEVSM131

Higher education credits: 9. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Compulsory for: ID3. Course coordinator: Kent Persson, kent.persson@byggmek.lth.se, Byggnadsmekanik. Assessment: Three compulsory design assignments and a written examination. Home page: http://www.byggmek.lth.se.

Aim
The aim of the course is to give an understanding of the interplay between material, shape and force. This understanding is to be utilised to analyse, determine and evaluate the shape and material choice of a product.

Contents
The course gives an insight to the use of computer aided geometry modelling and analysis. An overview of some fundamental physical concepts related to computer-aided analysis of structures and structural elements is given. Furthermore, different structural elements and their connections are discussed together with the influence of material properties on the structural behaviour. The possibilities of the computer-aided analysis, forms the viewpoint for these discussions. A number of designs are examined to illustrate and to form the background for discussions on the general behaviour of different geometrical shapes.

The computer-aided tools enable different geometrical shapes to be analysed. The computer-aided tools establish the interaction between the shape, material and the force.

Interaction between this and other courses, within the design project course, is presumed. The presentation of the design project course will include the knowledge and practical attainments gained during this course.

Literature
Lecture notes and exercises.
