Aim
The aim of this training course is to provide the students with a foundation in the Rescue Service's methods, work routines, and scope of operations. The student will receive an understanding of how and for what reasons the organisation operates.

With these knowledge skills and preparations as a base, the student will be able to participate in the daily operations of a community-based Rescue Service.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to describe the methods and techniques applied to fires within a building, traffic accidents, spills of hazardous substances, and life-saving operations on water.

• be able to handle the equipment required to address these situations.

• be able to describe and understand the risks that are inherent in the above situations and to outline the safety-related measures that are required to address these types of risk.

• be able to explain the role of the Rescue Service and that of other community agencies at the site of an accident.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to fulfil the role of Fireman, as an individual and in a group, in simple, uncomplicated rescue situations.

Contents

• Tactics, organisation, laws.

• Vehicles and materiel, "smoke-diving", fire-fighting water supply, hoses / hose operation, fundamental fire theory, and fire evolution.

• Life-saving on water, at great heights, traffic accidents, electrical risks.

• "Chemical diving", decision-making support, knowledge of chemicals.

• Investigative techniques, heart and lung problems, ethics, contagious diseases, emotional first-aid, back-up support for colleagues.
