Prerequisites: The following is required for admission to the course: 90 ECTS credits program studies including VVR111 and EXTA01.
Assessment: Assessment takes the form of a written test at the end of the course. Students who fail the ordinary test will have an opportunity to take another test in close proximity to the ordinary test. In order to pass the course the student is required to have passed the test, have acceptable practical reports, have acceptable project reports and to have participated in all compulsory course elements.

The aim is for students to acquire the knowledge and understanding for the scientific basis for biological monitoring within nature conservation.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
The course will prepare students for professions concerned with the monitoring of plant and animal populations and the interpretation of collected data.
- understand the scientific basis for biological monitoring within nature conservation.
After completion of the course students will be able to plan research, critically assess inventories using different methods and where applicable analyse time series data, as well as present results to different target groups relating to the following course elements:
- vegetation mapping through the interpretation of aerial photographs and field monitoring
- mapping of bird populations at different levels of detail using absolute and relative methods
- identification of suitable locations for the monitoring of populations of rare or threatened invertebrates, batrachians and reptiles, birds and mammals
- common vegetation classification systems and the differences between them
- monitoring of populations and species composition on the community level
- written reports and mapping of natural areas.
The course includes the following important sections:
- society's requirement for inventories e.g. regional authorities, municipalities, regional forestry boards etc.
- planning of inventories: cartographic studies, studies of the literature, interpretation of aerial photographs, time- and cost estimates as well as sampling methods depending on goal-setting and the final product
- monitoring programmes carried out in Sweden at local, regional and national levels
- landscape analysis - the landscape as an ecosystem and planning unit, nature conservation assessment
- sampling methods for selected groups of organisms in different biotopes: Distribution of sample plots, selection of traps and sampling methods, treatment and reporting of quantitative data
- different vegetation classification systems
- documentation and management plans for nature reserves
- computing and statistical methods, analysis of time series data
- nature conservation assessment
- practice in spoken and written communication.
