The course gives basic as well as advanced knowledge regarding the creation of effective and efficient materials flow in a company. The course also provides skills in methods for analysing material flows and materials handling needs, and how to choose and design materials handling systems. Another goal is to give a short introduction to queuing theory.

For a passing grade the student must

Material flow analysis, fixed and flexible handling equipment, load carriers and unit loads packages, storage and warehouse equipment, terminal automation and layout planning, analysis of stock levels and tools for designing optimal stock levels, queuing theory and simulation. Acquire or rent equipment, production layout’s and structure’s effect on materials flow, organization structure’s effect on material flow, and study materials handling in practice.

Higher education credits: 1,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Satisfactorily completed cases. Contents: In a case study, the students in groups (3-4) should solve a fictitious company's materials handling problems. A written report should be presented. Furthermore, completed exercises and assignments are required.
