PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT INCLUDING RAPID PROTOTYPINGMMKA01

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: TH. Level: G1 (First level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Compulsory for: KID2. Assessment: The course includes two compulsory projects which are carried out in groups of 3-5 students. Approved first project earns a score between 10 - 30 points. Aim
The course objective is to give the student a basic knowledge of strategies, terminology and methods utilized in product planning, product development and how advanced techniques are utilized in creating rapid prototyping. The course should also provide basic understanding in the form of procedures, methods and techniques utilized in systematic development work.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

independently or in a team be able to analyze the need for product renewal in small and medium sized enterprises, SMEs.

independently or in a team structure and plan the carrying through of a product renewal project.

given the mission project statement, structure, plan and carry through the conceptual development phase within the product development process.

have obtained such insights into methods and techniques utilized within rapid prototyping, that the participant in the course independently or in a team is able to apply these within the type of development /design projects outlined above.

be able to communicate the results from a development / design project to representatives of an industrial company orally and in writing.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to, in the form of a team work, actively participate in all parts in carrying through a product renewal project of some complexity.

for an industrial enterprise, and in the form of a team work, be able to carry through that part of the product development project focusing on the conceptual development phase.

have obtained such insights into methods, techniques and terminology, that the student is able to communicate his/her results.

Contents
The course includes pre-product development or strategic product development in the form of product planning as well as product development, with focus on the conceptual development phase. After introducing the theory on product planning and product development, a product development project is carried out. Focus in this project is set on the conceptual development phase, even though it also incorporates some aspects of product planning. Rapid prototyping is also to be theoretically as well as practically utilized in the project.
