CHEMICAL PROCESS AND REACTION ENGINEERING, BASIC COURSEKTE023

Higher education credits: 15. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. KTE023 overlap following cours/es: KET045 och KET045. Compulsory for: K3. Course coordinator: Professor Arne Andersson, Arne.Andersson@chemeng.lth.se, Inst för kemiteknik. Recommended prerequisits: KKK060 Chemical Engineering, FMA410 Calculus in One Variable, KFK080 Thermodynamics and KAK016 Analytical Chemistry. Assessment: Written examination, simulation tasks and laboratory assignment. Parts: 2. Home page: http://www.chemeng.lth.se/kte023/.

Aim
An important work task for chemical engineers is to participate in the realization of chemical reactions in both large and small scale. The work requires knowledge in measurement and evaluation of kinetic data as well as dimensioning, simulation and choice of reactor type considering given prerequisites. The course gives the basic skills that are required for further studies and professional development in chemical reaction engineering.

Contents
The theoretical part of the course, Chemical Reaction Engineering, gives basic knowledge about reactor models, mass transfer and applied reaction kinetics. Subjects that are treated include material and energy balances for ideal reactor models (isothermal and nonisothermal liquid and gas phase reactions), choice of reactor model, heterogeneous reaction systems (reactor models, external and internal mass transfer and kinetic expressions), diffusion and reaction in porous particles, non-ideal reactors and simulation of chemical reactions to illustrate the properties of different reactor models.

The experimental part of the course, Chemical Process Engineering, comprises a compulsory project task that is performed in group. Technical and chemical aspects of an assigned chemical process are to be independently considered through a survey of literature, planning of experiments, performing a series of experiments, and evaluation of experimental data. Reporting is made in the form of written reports, which are presented and defended in oral examinations.
