The aim of the course is to give an overview of major chemical production processes from feedstock to end product. By application and integration of the skills previously being acquired in basic chemistry and engineering courses, the course intend to give a deeper understanding of the building principles of chemical production processes and the factors that control the choice of process and design regarding the competition between possible feedstocks, technical status, alternative processes, environmental issues and economic considerations. With examples from existing processes the course addresses the challenges a chemical engineer being confronted with in activities related to process development. By teaching illustrating examples, the intention is to give the student an innovative background.

The following subjects are treated in the course: structure and localization of the chemical industry, raw materials for chemicals production, refinery processes, production of inorganic and organic chemicals, fine chemicals and polymers, biochemical production, pulp and paper manufacture, process development and evaluation. To activate the students and consolidate the skills, a part of the examination is in the form of compulsory project assignments.
