3D MODELLING AND RENDERINGIDEA10

Higher education credits: 5. Grading scale: UG. Level: G1 (First level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. IDEA10 overlap following cours/es: MMK120 och MMK120. Compulsory for: KID1. Course coordinator: Professor Claus-Christian Eckhardt, Claus.Eckhardt@design.lth.se, Industridesign. Assessment: The grades awarded are either “pass” or “fail”, depending on attendance, participation and completion of home assignments. Further information: The course contains of lectures and individual computer supervision. Home page: http://www.ide.lth.se.

Aim
To learn about the applications and practise the use of essential 3D design software.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

understand the concepts behind and usefulness of 3D modelling and rendering using software. The student shall be confident in the basic use of Alias AutoStudio so as to quickly and confidently develop and present concepts and designs.

Contents
The course commences with a brief introduction to the use and application of 3D software in the industrial design profession. The operation and navigation within the modular user interface of Alias AutoStudio is explained and practised (menus, icons, hotkeys, functions, etc.) before the concept of NURBS modelling with curves is introduced. Various types of curves and surfaces are practised, based on the remodelling of a simple product in 3D. Issues like surface accuracy and model quality are addressed as well as modelling strategy (“where to start”). The basics of rendering will be learnt based on the finished model, including topics such as choice of resolution, scene setup, camera setup, lighting setup, colours, materials and the mapping of graphics and textures.
