HISTORY OF DESIGNEXTA05

Higher education credits: 4. Grading scale: UG. Level: G1 (First level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. EXTA05 overlap following cours/es: TEK260 och TEK260. Compulsory for: KID1. Assessment: Teaching methods: Instruction consists of lectures and seminars. Examination: Examination consists of one take-home-exam. Re-examination are offered in January and August. Further information: The course is intended for students without previous studies at university level within the field. The course supersede TEK 260.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Have basic knowledge of design history, particularly history of industrial design, and have knowledge of its stylistic and fashion related connections to visual culture in general.

Be familiar with design as an expression of technical and industrial development, and have knowledge of the history of the professional role of the designer.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Be familiar with basic methods of studying design history.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to relate design history to various social and cultural contexts; power, gender and ethnicity are to the student obvious and fundamental aspects in the study of design history.

Contents
1. Structure

Instruction consists of lessons and seminars were the students also are given possibilities to discus their own ongoing projects in a critical context.

2. Content

The course presents an outline and a problematisation of Western design history. A multitude of different types of designed objects are studied. They are discussed in relation to the cultural context in which they were made, in relation to the history of art, in relation to individual designers. Design is also related to conditions of power, ethnicity and pluralism. Matters of experiencing, describing, analysing, and interpreting design are essential.
