For a detailed description of the entire block, see ESS000 Electronics, Systems and Signals. Home page: http://www.elmat.lth.se/.

Aim
Electrical measurements relate to almost all professional areas where a person with a M.Sc. in Engineering will be active. It may, e.g., be detailed studies on signals from nerve cells in the brain, light detection in optical fibres or manufacturing supervision in process plants. The development of new measurement methods and transducers occurs at an increasing rate, where especially the development in the area of microsystem technology plays a major role.

Relation to other courses in the track ESS000.

Measurements mean within the area of electro science detection, registration and interpretation of signals in order to perform analysis of electrical systems. In this course building blocks, which have been treated in the other courses in the ESS000 track, are utilised to form measurement methods. The course gives a deeper understanding of the measurement methods that have been used and will be used in other courses and in the professional life.

Contents
Fundamental concepts like loading of the measurement objects, influence of noise, uncertainty in the results and calibration. Analogue and digital oscilloscopes, digital multimeter, measurement of impedance with bridge- and voltage/current-methods, measurement of time and frequency with universal counter, measurement of frequency spectra with spectrum- and FFT-analyser (FFT – Fast Fourier Transform). Design of measurement systems. Within the course is (for students of Electrical Engineering) confined a part of a case study, described in ESS080 Presentation of Analysis: Technical Aspects of an Application.
