MODERNISTIC ARCHITECTURE - RENEWAL, THEORYABVN05

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: UG. Level: A (Second level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. ABVN05 overlap following cours/es: ABV065. Optional for: A4. Course coordinator: Professor Mats Edström, mats.edstrom@byggark.lth.se, Bebyggelsevård. Prerequisites: Passed examination for attending year 4 or similar. The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 10. Assessment: During the course, constant reference is made to the individuals level of knowledge: each gives a preliminary account of his or her work-in-process in a paper that is assessed. Successfully to complete the course, a student must attend not less than eighty per cent of the lectures and study visits; actively take part in preliminary and final assessments. Further information: This course is a theoretical deepening and compulsory to "Modernistic Architecture, -renewal, project" 18hp, but is also open to other qualified students. Aim
The course aims to ensure that each student attains a competent knowledge of building and re-building modern buildings; be able to discuss and analyse their renovation qualities.

An architect’s restoration work requires careful preliminary study and great detail in planning; central to it are the qualities of sustainable constructions that can be renewed. Restoration work should also avoid superficial trends and tendencies.

Contents
Considering culturally and historically valuable modernistic buildings, the course gives knowledge of, training in and an understanding of design to be applied at a point where new and old architecture meet. It focuses especially on the function, design and material of buildings, and their maintenance and renewal. Relevant Swedish legislation is considered, together with formal demands for care and procedures in rebuilding work.
