Prerequisites: Upper secondary education or an equivalent thereof is required for admittance. Assessment: There are four written exams after the end of parts 1 and 2 of the course: Reading comprehension (Swedish tutor) 1 credit (1.5 ECTS credits) Reading comprehension (English tutor) 1 credit (1.5 ECTS credits) Translation (Swedish—English) 1 credit (1.5 ECTS credits) Essay 1 credit (1.5 ECTS credits) The grade for oral proficiency (1 credit, 1.5 ECTS credits) is based on the student’s presentation (see Part 3 above), and on the student’s oral performance in class (attendance is mandatory). Aim
The aim of the course is to enhance the students’ reading and listening comprehension of English as used for specialist and general purposes within science and technology; moreover, to enhance the students’ oral and written proficiency, especially within the field of science and technology.

Contents
Description
The course is made up of the following parts:
Part 1. Reading comprehension (2 credits, 3 ECTS credits) Texts on science and technology, amounting to approx. 700 pages, are studied. Exercises focus on phrases and usage common in technical English.
Part 2. Written proficiency (2 credits, 3 ECTS credits)
The students’ written proficiency is exercised in connection with the texts read in Part 1 of the course (see above), and through studying a basic grammar book. In addition, there are exercises in writing short essays and summaries.
Part 3. Oral proficiency (1 credit, 1.5 ECTS credits)
The students’ ability to speak and understand spoken English of a certain degree of difficulty is enhanced through discussions, listening comprehension exercises, and pronunciation exercises. The students are required to give a short presentation of a technical subject to the group.
