The course is introduced by covering the relationship between result and financial position of a company in the goods and service industry. The flow of a company´s resources between the balance sheet and the profit and loss account is illustrated and discussed, focusing on the effects of the financial and market key ratios. Revenue and cost structures are analysed as a basis for calculating profitability, solidity as well as break-even turnover and safety margins.

The lectures are supported with financial exercises/laboratory experiments using a business simulator. In this way students are given the opportunity to immediately apply the theories learned in the course on a virtual reality, which gives the student an increased understanding of the subject and a platform from which one is prepared for future exercises in a business environment.

Midway through the course investment models and strategies are discussed, from a theoretical as well as a practical perspective, through exercises in long-term profitability planning by using examples from several investment standpoints/cases.

The course finishes by considering current legislative ruling on the contents of the annual reports, as well the calculation of profitability and solidity. There upon the student will prepare and present its annual report to a shareholder´s general meeting with analysis of the (virtual) company´s financial position, profitability as well as any adverse situations which arose during the fiscal period, at which point the elements which have been studied during the course are presented in a variance analysis.
