The group exam is based on written and oral presentations of the project work. The individual exam is in the form of written tests and report writing. For a passing grade the requirements are: 1) Satisfactory exercises, carried out in groups of three or four students. 2) Satisfactory project work carried out in groups of three or four students. Equivalent to 3 credits. 3) Satisfactory PBL-exercises with individual report writing equivalent to 6 credits. 4) A passing exam grade is equivalent to 6 credits. Parts: 3. Aim
The aim of this course is to give the participants an insight into how the different parts in an infrastructure system cooperate with and affect one another, as well as how these parts are planned in practice. It also considers the infrastructure’s national economic significance.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Describe and analyse various solutions for the treatment of waste water and sewage.

Explain various concepts in water and environmental engineering, acoustics, legislation, and economic concepts.

Calculate the noise level indoors and outdoors.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Design and analyse measures for the existing water network during its building process according to established norms.

Apply economic analytical methods as a prioritising instrument in the planning and comparison of the alternatives within an infrastructure system.

Implement different measurement methods to determine the outdoor levels of traffic noise.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Understand the need for a collective and clear problem specification, alternative suggestions for problem solving and the importance of coordinating expertise from various areas – including the financial – in the planning and implementation of infrastructure systems.

Be aware of the importance of consequence analysis and easily understandable presentation of complicated technical solutions.

Contents
In study period 1 the emphasis is on lectures and exercises, by way of introduction to water and environmental engineering, acoustics and national and transport economics. These skills, which are needed to support the project, are applied to a planned housing area. Great emphasis is placed on the ability to coordinate the different interests and to present the suggestions both orally and written. The project deals with measures in the existing water network during its building period and the effects of these on the inclusion of a new housing area. The feasibility of applying local solutions for the new housing area is also considered. The noise levels indoors and outdoors are calculated for a smaller section. Finally, suggestions are made for project economics, financing and contract forms.

Course Acoustics (2p)

The course contains psychoacoustics models for traffic noise in general. These models describe relation between experience of the noise and its character. Furthermore the course treats noise propagation outside the buildings and façade isolations. The roads emplacement in relation to settlements as well as different types of measures to reduce noise level indoors and outdoors are treated. Measurement methods for determining the noise level outdoors caused by traffic is presented.
