Syllabus academic year 2007/2008
INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS - URBAN WATERVVB100

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Optional for: V3. Course coordinator: Viveks Lidström, viveka.lidstrom@chemeng.lth.se, Vägbyggnad. Recommended prerequisits: VBE013. The number of participants is limited to 20 Assessment: A passing grade requires satisfactory project work and a part exam at the end of 1p 1. This exam consists of the fundamental concepts and links necessary for carrying out the project. A higher grade requires a satisfactory performance in the exam at the end of the term. The project work is equivalent to 2 credits. Parts: 2. Further information: The course might be given in English. Home page: http://www.tft.lth.se.

Aim
The aim is to give students an insight into how a water system is built up in an urban environment. The project work entails the whole process of planning and constructing an infrastructure with a water network. The course is important for a holistic understanding of the creation of good environments for people.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Describe and explain how urban systems for water and traffic function, and be familiar with how these appear in the planning process and affect each other.

Introduce a life-cycle perspective into the planning process, i.e. what the chosen solution in the planning process implies for future needs in the operation and maintenance of the infrastructure system.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Design a decision-making base for infrastructure systems with varying prerequisites and limitations.

Deal with project methodology, where water and environmental engineering is a part of the infrastructure project.

Identify and solve problems independently by seeking the relevant information and steering his/her own learning.

Mediate the acquired knowledge by bringing it to the attention of politicians and the public at large.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Evaluate alternative solutions in an infrastructure project by considering both negative and positive consequences.

Understand the need for clear problem specification and alternative solutions to problems, as well as the importance of coordinating expertise from different fields in planning and implementing infrastructure projects. Emphasise the importance of consequence analysis and easily understandable presentations of complicated technical solutions.

Participate in group discussions and coordinate different interests in a constructive manner. Working in groups and projects trains the student’s ability to identify and solve problems.

Contents
In study period 1 the focus is on lectures and exercises. The study period ends with a part-exam to ensure that the participants have acquired the skills needed to carry out the project. A project equivalent to 2 credits runs throughout the course but is mainly carried out during study period 2. The project illustrates how an urban water network is designed and how the expansion of the network affects the existing network. The course deals with the urban clean water system; supply, need for purification and quality, and a storage and distribution system. Other aspects dealt with are the collection and transport of sewage and waste water, the network’s quality and effects on the recipient, and the relevant legislation and environmental testing.

Projektet
The knowledge and skills obtained from the different parts of the course are applied to a planned residential area. Particular attention is paid to the ability to coordinate different interests and to make oral and written presentations of the suggestions. The project deals with measures taken during the building phase of the existing water network and the effects of extending the network to a new housing area. The project also considers the feasibility of applying local solutions for the new housing area.
