Alternative for: V3. Course coordinator: Ebrahim Parhamifar,, Vägbyggnad. Prerequisites: VVB055 Infrastructure design and VTT100 The Process of Spatial Planning. Recommended prerequisits: VGT100 . The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 5. The number of participants is limited to 45 Assessment: Students are examined both individually and in a collaborative group. The group exam is based on written and oral presentations of the project work. The individual exam consists of written tests and report writing. For a passing grade the requirements are: 1) Satisfactory exercises in groups of three or four students. 2) Satisfactory project work in groups of three or four students, equivalent to 6 credits. 3) Satisfactory PBL exercises with individual report writing equivalent to 6 credits. 4) The exam passing grade is equivalent to 9 credits. Parts: 3. Further information: The course might be given in English. Home page:

The aim of this course is to give the participants an insight into how the different parts of the infrastructure system interact with and affect one another and our noise environment, as well as how the infrastructure is planned in practice. The course also takes up the infrastructure’s national economic significance.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Describe and analyse investigative methods for traffic flows, level of service, transport and accessibility needs for a good living environment, and the demands these make on the design of the public transport network, pedestrian and cycle networks and the inter-linkages of these networks.

Explain various concepts in the infrastructure system’s relevant components; acoustics, road construction, traffic and water and environmental technology.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Apply economic analytical methods and financial considerations as a prioritising instrument in the planning and comparison of the alternatives within an infrastructure system

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Understand the need for clear problem formulation, alternative suggestions for problem solving and the importance of paying attention to different perspectives in the planning, presentation and implementation of infrastructure projects.

This course is a continuation of the process of social structures and infrastructure design. It will not, however, be concerned with the construction itself, but the infrastructure needed for the area to function. The area has to be provided with a water supply; sewage and waste water must be removed or treated locally. Accessibility through networks for different traffic users has to be planned; parking spaces and public transport have to be provided. The negative noise effects of traffic have to be assessed. Bus stops, car parks and cycle paths have to be designed and dimensioned and suitable materials have to be used for different surfaces.

The course beginning is characterised by a fair amount of knowledge acquired through lectures and exercises. This knowledge has a bearing on a wider area than the project, which is mainly carried out in the latter part of the course. The project work reflects the manner in which the various infrastructure parts interact, and how the traffic and building designs affect the noise levels in an area. Some economic aspects are considered in connection with resource allocation, financing and exploitation of new areas.
