Syllabus academic year 2007/2008
PAVEMENT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTIONVVB071

Higher education credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: A (Second level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. VVB071 overlap following cours/es: VTVF15, VVB070, VTVF15 och VVB070. Optional for: V4at, V4tp. Course coordinator: Ebrahim Parhamifar, Ebrahim.Parhamifar@tft.lth.se, Vägbyggnad. Prerequisites: VVB055 Infrastructure Design, VVB090 Infrastructure systems. Recommended prerequisits: VVB027 Highway and railway design. The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 5. The number of participants is limited to 45 Assessment: Two project tasks and a home assignment are required for a passing grade. Further information: Project work. Aim
The aim is to give students the ability to how a road is designed and constructed that will maintain an optimal standard throughout its service life.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Describe:

How to ensure the standard and bearing capacity of a road by using statistical acceptance control during its construction.

The qualities of different materials used in road construction and identify suitable material models for predicting road deterioration.

The areas of application, possibilities and problems associated with using recycled material in road construction.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Design a road with an incremental model.

Draw up a simple production plan comprising calculations, tenders and material utilization based on construction specifications.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Independently search for and evaluate relevant information for an incremental design.

Contents
Methods for planning, design and construction of road and streets, applicable to both Swedish and international conditions.

• Ground investigations during ongoing work.

• Swedish and international pavement design.

• Analytical pavement design. Calculation of stresses and strains in road material. Material fatigue criteria of exposed surfaces.

• Material choice and quality. Material models for choice of bound and unbound material in road construction.

• Quality control. Statistical acceptance control. Measurement methods from terrace to surface, falling weight deflectometer (FWD), plate bearing tests, compaction and the link to bearing capacity.

• GIS. GPS applications in road construction.

• Cost analysis of different solutions. Calculated and actual costs. Lifecycle analysis.
