The course intends to provide the student with an insight into the different road users; how the road network and infrastructure are designed to best suit the different traffic groups’ characteristics.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

· Acquire knowledge of;

road user groups’ prerequisites, needs and wishes

traffic infrastructure, the different types and the principles used in their design

level of service and routing models and methods for investigating level of service

the road network for different groups of road users, and understand how the design of this network affects the different traffic modes

the interconnection of design, traffic flows and level of service

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Have the ability to design and carry out certain types of traffic surveys

· Be able to conduct a traffic net analysis and have the ability to detect its shortcomings in respect of different traffic user groups

· Be able to perform level of service investigations for different traffic user groups in different types of traffic installations

· Have the ability to implement acquired skills in an own traffic survey and present the results orally and written with suitable illustrations

· Be able to apply a scientific approach to a given problem, formulate hypotheses, argue and communicate in a group.

The course is divided into four main themes, in each of which theoretical knowledge obtained from the literature is alternated with practice in real traffic environments:

Traffic infrastructure– Overall field study of different types of traffic facilities with different designs.

Level of service – Carry out field surveys of level of service in the traffic facilities mentioned above. Choose one to use in a level of service model.

Traffic network – Compile and analyse information on the main arteries for cars, public transport, cycles and pedestrians. Identify conflict points by means of this analysis.

Design details – Using the analysis of the traffic environment and traffic user behaviour, point out drawbacks at a chosen spot and suggest changes to the design.

The course work is both individual and in groups. Lectures are alternated with literature studies and exercises.
