SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC, ADVANCED COURSE 3VTT121

Higher education credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: A (Second level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. VTT121 overlap following cours/es: VTT120 och VTT120. Optional for: V4tp. Course coordinator: Eva Ericsson, eva.ericsson@tft.lth.se, Trafikteknik. Recommended prerequisits: Traffic 1, (VTT130), Traffic 2 (VTT140) or corresponding. Assessment: Satisfactory PBL- and exercise problems. The examination task is to compose and present a scientific paper proving that the student has assimilated the course knowledge and has the ability to adapt in. To approve the paper the course coordinator shall have a possibility to follow the working process. PBL problems and exercises are graded approved/not approved. The course grade is based on the quality of the paper, the presentation of the paper and the opposition of another paper. Further information: The teaching is based on problem based learning (PBL). Aim
The aim of the course is knowledge and understanding of safety and environmental effects of traffic and the affect of various factors. After passed course the students will have a systematic point of view concerning environmental and safety problems and connected measures at different levels.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

have a detailed knowledge on the extent of and have a comprehension of how various factors affect these

be able to independently analyze the safety and environmental effect caused by traffic to reduce these at various levels

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

· have the ability to apply a general and structured pack of knowledge about safety and environmental effect caused by traffic on a current problem

Independently seek and value information from various sources

Have basic skill to apply a scientific method on a given problem, formulate hopothesis, argument based on relevant facts and theories.

Be able to compose and present a scientific paper on, oppose on another student’s paper and analyze and understand the essence of a scientific paper.

Contents
Traffic safety problems and negative environmental impacts from traffic.

Description of safety and environmental problems caused by traffic in terms of quantity and quality. Facts and relations that affect these. Methods to estimate/quantify traffic safety, pollution and noise. National and international targets concerning t raffic safety and environmental impacts. Measures to decrease traffic safety and environmental problems on a comprehensive and a detailed level.

PBL problem are combined with exercises (a case with several elements). Emphasis is laid on that the student learn to identify problem and lack of knowledge and therefore independently seeks relevant information and knowledge. Each element is presented in a paper, review by aother students and discussed.

The comprehensive paper process goes on parallel to the course. Tutor meetings are held at fixed occasions by the tutor in groups of two or three students. Within the tutor group the students review the other student’s paper and give mutual feedback.
