SIMULATION OF FIRES IN ENCLOSURESVBR200

Higher education credits: 7,5. Grading scale: UG. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in English. Optional for: BI3, RH4. Course coordinator: Professor Göran Holmstedt, goran.holmstedt@brand.lth.se, Brandteknik och riskhantering. Prerequisites: VBR033 Fire Dynamics. Recommended prerequisits: VBR022 Fire Chemistry and Explosions. The number of participants is limited to 24 Selection criteria: Credits remaining for the degree. Assessment: Written individual examination and approved individual assignments and group projects. The group project assignment shall be reported both orally and in writing. The written group report shall follow the Department of Fire Safety Engineering's regulations for assignments at Level II, http://www.brand.lth.se/fileadmin/brandteknik/utbild/inuppgkrav.pdf. Home page: http://www.brand.lth.se/?id=VBR200.

Aim
The course is designed to provide knowledge of how the spread of fire and combustion gases is simulated using ”Computational Fluid Dynamics” (CFD), in fire safety design and fire investigations. It also provides an understanding of the limitations of the numerical and physical models used, and an awareness of the most common sources of error.
