DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

VBK035

Higher education credits: 4,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VBK035 overlap following cours/es: VBK036 och VBK036. Optional for: V4at, V4hb, V4sa. Course coordinator: Tord Isaksson, Tord.Isaksson@kstr.lth.se, Konstruktionsteknik. Prerequisites: VSM141 Structural Mechanics. Recommended prerequisits: VSM091 Beam theory, VBK055 Structural Engineering-Building System, VSM150 Engineering Modelling: Analysis of Structures. Aim
The course develops understanding of the mechanical behaviour of and skills in designing more specialised and complex steel structures.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Understand mechanical response of steel structures as well as the behaviour of connections in steel structures throughout their entire expected life-time
Be able to relate relevant theories from the field of mechanics and materials science to practice oriented applications involving steel as well as understand the possibilities and restrictions that are valid

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to design steel structural elements and details
Departing from specific functional requirements be able to model adequate load bearing steel structures
Be able to deliver written accounts concerning the premises for a design or technical assessment task
Be able to produce written and graphical documentation for a design or technical assessment task

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to relate critically to different calculation and design methods in the field of steel design

Contents
The following phenomena are included in the course and treated from the point of view of design of steel structures:

Stability phenomena (plane, lateral and flexural-torsional buckling
Local buckling
Bending and shear
Torsion
Tension and compression members, beam-columns
Lateral stabilization of steel structural systems
Welded and bolted connections
Fatigue

The course is given as lectures associated with exercises. The design project (e.g. travelling crane structure, steel bridge or multi-storey steel building) gives the student training to independently define, solve and present their work.
