Prerequisites: The following are required for admission to the course: 90 ECTS credits Science studies including a course corresponding to BIO580 Basic Ecology 15 ECTS credits.
Assessment: Assessment takes the form of written tests during and at the end of the course. Students who fail the ordinary tests will have an opportunity to take another test in close proximity to the ordinary test. In order to pass the course the student is required to have passed the test, have acceptable practical reports, have acceptable hand-in exercises, have acceptable project reports and to have participated in all compulsory course elements.

The overall aim of the course is understanding the influence of society, forestry and agriculture on Swedish natural areas, as well as their effects on the need for and types of nature conservation.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- have an overview of the legislation concerning protection and conservation of fauna, flora and biotopes
- be familiar with municipal physical planning processes, the different authorities involved in them and the plans available to local authorities
- be able to set goals for the management of different types of natural area, and write a management plan to achieve these goals
- understand how the cultural landscape has developed and the timescale involved, as well as identify the different types of land use existing before the end of the 19th century
- describe political goal-setting and control, management techniques for today's agriculture and forestry, and the economic conditions for industry as well as the effects of industry on flora and fauna
- understand the processes influencing the spread and preservation of organisms on the landscape level
- be able to produce a management plan, write the plan and present it orally, giving reasons for the measures included in it.
- physical planning in Sweden at the local authority level. Areas of responsibility of the county councils and the Department of Nature Conservation. The EU's environmental policies and different types of support. Sweden's environmental goals and Agenda 21. Different municipal plans for land use and the municipal ecologist's professional responsibilities and standpoint within a local authority.
- the development of the cultural landscape and agricultural development during the 20th century, and a comparison of conventional and organic farming. The development of forestry during the 20th century and current forest conservation legislation. How forestry is run in Sweden today. Environmental certification of forestry. Fauna and the environment, the shooting of game and the legislation governing it, game conservation. Types of endangered natural area and endangered species in Sweden.
- evaluation, the processing of conservation cases: including treatment of nature conservation cases by different authorities. Case studies of nature conservation measures, restoration and conservation from an international perspective.
