Syllabus academic year 2007/2008
ADVANCED COMBUSTION ENGINE TECHNOLOGYMVK106

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: TH. Level: A (Second level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in English on demand. MVK106 overlap following cours/es: MVK105, MVK105 och MVK105. Optional for: F4, M3, M3en, M3fo. Course coordinator: Prof Bengt Johansson, Bengt.Johansson@vok.lth.se, Energivetenskaper. Prerequisites: MVK093 Introduction to Combustion Engines. Assessment: Written examination graded with Fail or one of the passing grades 3, 4 or 5 which normally correspond to 40, 60 and 80% of the maximum number of points respectively. In order to qualify for participation in the written examination all of the mandatory laboratory exercises must have been completed with approved reports. Home page: http://www.vok.lth.se.

Contents
The course starts with an in-cylinder pressure analysis for heat release evaluation. Then the engine mechanical design and force transfer from piston to output shaft is analysed. The balancing of multi-cylinder engines is presented. The gas exchange system is presented in some detail. The design of valves and combustion chambers in four stroke engines are discussed. Gas exchange in two stroke engines as well as supersharging are also presented. Carburettors, port fuel injection and direct fuel injection of gasoline the three types of fuel preparation of SI engines, are described with emphasis on direct fuel injection. The third type of internal combustion engine, HCCI, is explained. Finally the Stirling engine is presented in some detail.

At least one laboratory work will be given in which the in-cylinder pressure is measured as a function of crank angle. A course project with contents varying from year to year is also included. It could for example be on heat release calculation from cylinder pressure or gas exchange simulation with commercial software.
