Aim
The aim with the course is to give the student a basic knowledge of how to design a conceptual model and use it as a base when building a simulation model to analyse the packaging system.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• identify the packaging system to design a conceptual model

• design simulation modells for analyse of different packaging systems

• describe the most important components of the simulation method

• describe the most important distribution functions and their properties

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• problemize a handling/packaging system and use it as a base for the conceptual model

• build and design models with the AutoMod software

• use simulation models to explain different scenarios

• analyse results with the Autostat software

• design experiments with factor experiment method

• design animation models

• design user friendly userinterfaces using standard routines

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• give oral and written presentations of the solution of a packaging logistics problem

Contents
Modelling of packaging systems creates basic knowledge about the studied system, about discrete event simulation as a method and how modelling and simulation can be used to analyse packaging lines. In addition modelling and simulation as a method is covered. Commercial software are used as tools in the course activities and assignments. Lectures, assignments, guest lectures and plant visits to packaging producers and users in the region are used in the learning process. The final project is carried out by the students in groups of two students.
