PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY

Higher education credits: 4,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Optional for: I3lp, M4, M4lp. Aim
The purpose with the course, is to give students an overall view and understanding of packaging development and packaging systems and their role in society.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

evaluate and describe the packaging system for consumer packages considered the aspects of product requirements, market requirements, product safety, regulations, printing techniques and environmental requirements
describe the development process for packaging development
describe the features of the most important packaging materials (plastic, fibre, glass and metal)
describe the packaging functions in the different part of the packaging value chain
describe the environmental requirements for the packaging system based on producer and user needs and return handling
relate and interpret the implications of an EU-perspective for packaging

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

identify product, market and environmental requirements, on the packaging system
suggest and evaluate different packaging materials at the design of packages
analyse the packaging system from handling, marketing and environmental perspectives
evaluate and prioritise different packaging solutions from handling, marketing and environmental perspectives

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

present the most suitable packaging solution, both orally and written, based on a given practical case

Contents
The course is based on lectures with lecturers from the department and from industry. The lectures deal with packaging development for different product applications. Furthermore the lectures include areas as different packaging material, printing techniques, marketing aspects and environmental aspects. A study visit at Tetra Pak is included for packaging material production. The major part of the course is based on a project work in group, where the students should suggest and evaluate a packaging system for a consumer product.
