ENGINEERING DESIGN TECHNIQUES FROM A TECHNICAL DESIGN PERSPECTIVEMMK097

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Compulsory for: MD3. Course coordinator: Prof Robert Bjärnemo, robert.bjarnemo@mkon.lth.se, Maskinkonstruktion. Recommended prerequisits: Product Development (MMK040). Assessment: To receive a final passing grade, the student must receive a passing grade on two individual assignments – one in mechanical joint design and one in embodiment/detail design. Each assignment consists of a basic task (passing grade – 3 points), and two optional sub-tasks for those who would like to earn a higher grade (4 or 5 points). Only the basic task can be supplemented afterwards if the student does not pass the first time. Aim
The course aims to provide students with insights into some of the techniques which are essential for the technical designer regarding product architecture and embodiment/detail design. An important subobjective is to understand the cooperation between the estetical/ergonomic design represented by the industrial designer and the sicence-technical based design created by the engineering designer.

Contents
The course covers the basic principles of Embodiment design and Detail design in terms of basic design rules and design guidelines.

The first task to be undertaken by the students is an introductory project covering essential product characteristics such as the product working principle, product arcitechture and embodiment/detail design. This miniproject is carried out in teams of 3 - 5 students. The projects are presented during a seminar, during each and every one of the teams are expected to present the findings regaring "their" product.

During the next phase of the course mechanical joint design is introduced. The following types of joints are covered: bolted, bonded and welded joints. An individual task covering these types of joints conclude this part of the course.

The main part of the course focuses on embodiment and detail design. During this phase of the course basic design rules, emboduiment/detail design principles and guidelines are introduced. The concept of Design for X is thus indirectly covered. Among the diffrent X-aspects is material oriented design such as design of plastic products. In this part of the course a minor design project is performed, during which the students are expected to develop the Embodiment and Detail design aspects of a product of some complexity. This project is carried out by design teams consisting of 3 - 5 stuedents per team. The final result of the project is documented in a written report and in a prototype of the product-to-be. Each and every team should present their results at a seminar.

Higher education credits: 3. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Individual assignment. The results are presented in a written report which will be assessed based on a criteria list, which is distributed by the instructor when the assignment is introduced. Contents: This assignment concerns the development and analysis of a mechanical joint:design -bolted and/or welded.

Code: 0208. Name: Task 2 - Embodiment Design (Subsystem).
Higher education credits: 3. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: This is a team assignment. The results are presented in a written report which will be assessed based on the criteria list, which is distributed by the instructor when the assignment is introduced. In addition, the results will be presented orally at a seminar. All team members receive the same number of points earned on the project. Contents: Embodiment/detalied design of a subsystem in a conceptuel design of some complexity. The work may involve the establishment of the embodiment design (the product architecture) as well. In addition, the entire engineering design solution schould be analysed and documented, which also includes the manufacturing of a simple prototype - using rapid prototyping.
