Syllabus academic year 2007/2008
ENGINEERING DESIGN TECHNIQUESMMK095

Higher education credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: A (Second level). Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Optional for: I4pu, M3, M4me, M4pu. Course coordinator: Prof Robert Bjärnemo, robert.bjarnemo@mkon.lth.se, Maskinkonstruktion. Recommended prerequisits: MMK040 Product Development or similar course. Assessment: To receive a final passing grade, the student must receive a passing grade on the three individual assignments – one in mechanical joint design and two in embodiment design. Each assignment consists of a basic task (passing grade – 3 points), and two optional sub-tasks for those who would like to earn a higher grade (4 or 5 points). Only the basic task can be supplemented afterwards if the student does not pass the first time. The final grade will be the whole-number average of the points earned on the three individual assignments. Parts: 3. Home page: http://www.mkon.lth.se.

Aim
The course aims to provide students with insights into some of the techniques which are essential for the engineering designer such as mechanical joint design and embodiment design. Qualitative and quantitative methods are dealt with in each technique area.

Code: 0107. Name: Task 1 - Design of Mechanical Joint.
Higher education credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Individual assignment. The results are presented in a written report which will be assessed based on a criteria list, which is distributed by the instructor when the assignment is introduced. Contents: This assignment concerns the development and analysis of a joint:design - bolted and/or welded.

Code: 0207. Name: Task 2 - Embodiment Design (Synthesis).
Higher education credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Individual assignment. The results are presented in a written report which will be assessed based on a criteria list, which is distributed by the instructor when the assignment is introduced. Contents: This assignment concerns the development and analysis of a embodiment design for a solution principle. Actual solution alternatives are based on casted and/or welded solution princiåple.

Code: 0307. Name: Task 3 - Embodiment Design 3 (Subsystem).
Higher education credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: This is a group assignment. The results are presented in a written report which will be assessed based on the current criteria list, which is distributed by the instructor when the assignment is introduced. In addition, the results will be presented orally at a seminar. All group members receive the same number of points earned on the project. Contents: Embodiment/detalied design of a subsystem in a conceptuela design of some complexity. The work can contain the necessity of an established embodiment design (product architecture) as well. In addition, the entire engineering design solution schould be analysed and documented.
