WORKING ENVIRONMENT

MAM070

Higher education credits: 4,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. MAM070 overlap following cours/es: MAM095, MAM203, MAMA01, MAM095, MAM203 och MAMA01. Compulsory for: I3. Course coordinator: Senior lecturer Fredrik Rassner, Fredrik.Rassner@design.lth.se, Ergonomi och aerosolteknologi. Assessment: Written reports on group work, a written report on an individual study, an assessment of another students individual report and Problem Based Learning (PBL) sessions. For a passing grade the student must pass all assessments and contribute actively to the PBL sessions. The final grade is based on the combined results of the reports and the individual assignment. Aim
The aim of this course is for the student to acquire fundamental knowledge of work science. Upon course completion, the student should be able to evaluate how the work environment and the organisation of work affect the organisation/company from a management perspective.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

1. Analyse sound/noise, vibrations, illumination, thermal climate, chemical hazards and physical ergonomics with respect to:

basic theories used to describe and analyse work environments.
the effects on humans and work.
definitions of quantities, as well as how various quantities are measured and evaluated.
optimal levels for comfort and how any limit values are given.
organisational and technical principles of solving problems with the working environment.

2. Analyse how psychological and social aspects affect the working environment.

3. Analyse how Man and work are affected by concurrent factors.

4. Analyze various models for work organization and how these models determine and affect the working environment.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

analyse a given company and propose various measures to improve both the working environment and the profits of the company.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to retrieve, assess and apply knowledge of working science discriminatingly.

Contents

the course deals with physical environmental factors (noise, vibrations, illumination, thermal climate, chemical hazards), ergonomics relating to repetitive strain, risks of accidents, psychological and social aspects, work organisation, labour market laws and regulations, design of the working environment and technical measures.
the course comprises a lecture series and a series of problem based sessions. The scheduled lectures present an overview and are intended to support the individual studies. In the group sessions, a problem based learning methodology is applied, in which students are introduced to various points of departure. The progress of the group work is documented in written reports. Two of the lectures are open and the topics are decided upon after consultation with the students.
