Aim
The course should give advanced knowledge in solid state structural chemistry and materials chemistry including relevant methods of characterisation and synthesis. The course should also deepen the knowledge of the relationship between atomic structure and the chemical and physical properties of a material.

Contents
The course covers the main areas; atomic structure in inorganic materials, methods for structural characterisation of crystalline materials, synthesis of crystalline materials, the relationship between atomic structure and physical properties. The course also covers description of defects in crystalline materials. The structure of some inorganic materials is studied by means of graphical modelling in three dimensions together with practical model building. The project work comprises a presentation of materials used in a specific field of applications of products. As a tool in the project work an international inorganic structural database and visualisation software is used. The project work is presented as an Internet web-page and as an oral presentation.
