QUANTUM MECHANICSFMF025

Higher education credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in English on demand. Optional for: Pi4. Aim
This course aims to give the basics of the mathematical theory of Quantum Mechanics with applications in nano science.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

- know the formalism of quantum mechanics as well as mathematical methods

- be able to apply the theory on problems in nano physics

- ba able to identify the usefulness of the theory in some applications

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

- know how to use the methods of quantum mechanics to analyze and to calculate relevant physical quantities

- know how to decide whether a quantal or quantum calculation is applicable

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

- be able to apply the concepts of quantum mechanics in realistic problems

Contents
Basic formalism. Hermitian operators and eigenvalues. First order pertubation theory, variational methods and matrixdiagonalization. Spherical symmatry and angular momentum. Spin and magnetic interaction. Periodical potentils and Bloch wavefunctions.
