**Aim**

The aim of the course is to give the basic knowledge of solid mechanics with applications to everyday engineering problems. The project aims to increase the ability to design and analyse a structure in reality.

*Knowledge and understanding*

For a passing grade the student must

- be able to explain and use the concepts of stress and strain
- understand the importance of modelling the mechanical properties of the material to describe the relation between stress and strain
- be able to describe the phenomena principle stresses and principle strains
- be able to explain what happens in form of plasticity, fracture or instability by overload

*Skills and abilities*

For a passing grade the student must

- be able to identify what loads a structure is subjected to
- be able to calculate the deformations and stresses caused by these loads
- be able to calculate when fracture or instability occurs in a structure

*Judgement and approach*

For a passing grade the student must

- be able to choose material and calculate dimensions for simple structures
- be able to estimate the risk of permanent deformations, fractures or instability in the structure

**Contents**

The following subjects are dealt with in the course: Stress and strain analyses, mainly the state of plain stress. The three simple loadcases; uniaxial traction force, torque and bending moments applied to straight bars. Statically indeterminate beams. Fatigue. Rheological models. In connection to the different subjects some applications are shown such as pressure vessels, natural vibrations and critical speeds. The course also includes some laboratory experiments and a home assignment.
