Aim
The course aims are that the students shall develop their general problem solving skills. They shall learn to solve problems on computers with help of object-oriented programming and get practical experience of Java programming.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• have knowledge of primitive data types (i.e. integers, real numbers, and characters).

• have knowledge of basic data structures (i.e. arrays).

• have knowledge of basic program constructions (sequence, alternative and repetition).

• have knowledge of important object-oriented concepts (i.e. classes, objects, and inheritance).

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to solve problems of limited complexity by designing algorithms and writing programs.

• Be able to implement programs of limited complexity in Java:
  -implement algorithms with if, for, and while statements.
  -implement classes from given specifications.
  -use basic data structures as arrays.
  -use algorithms of limited complexity for searching, sorting, and registration.

• be able to read programming code and documentation.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• have confidence in using the computer for problem solving and thus be able to go further on his own in the field of programming and object-orientation.

• have confidence to discuss and make demands on software.

Contents
Programs as models of reality. Basic Java programming. Objects and operations, classes and methods. Basic algorithms and basic algorithm design. Data structures: arrays. Inheritance. Object-oriented software development.

Higher education credits: 3. Grading scale: TH. Assessment: Written examination. The final grade of the course is based on the result of the written examination. To qualify for the the written examination, students must have completed the compulsory exercises, laboratory work, and assignments.
