Aim
Computer science and engineering is a broad area where many techniques and tools are used. The course gives the students an opportunity to use some of them, especially those that are used later during their studies.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• know about different operating systems, especially Unix

• be familiar with the fundamentals of computer architecture, how computers are programmed at the assembly language level and how computers communicate over Internet

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to use LaTeX for typesetting and Matlab to solve mathematical problems

Contents
Practical use of computers, operating systems; computer history, the parts of a computer and how a computer works, low-level programming; typesetting with LaTeX; Internet and the WWW; introduction to Matlab.
