Assessment: Approved exercises, approved paper and at least 80% attendance at seminars, lectures and group critique.
Aim
The aim of the course is to deepen the students knowledge about the basic problematic, theories and methods in urban design. It aims to increase the awareness of the relation between strategic social development and physical design.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to analyse urban structure and its importance for long-term sustainability, attractiveness and strategic social development
- be able to relate the analysis to current and historical urban design strategies and problematic
- be able to interpret and analyse texts on urban planning theories
Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must
- in group, formulate criteria for change of urban areas
- in group, design urban spaces from formulated criteria
- orally and written, individually and in group, reflect over physical design in relation to as well physical context as current and historical urban design strategies.
- orally and visually be able to communicate ones project
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to value urban structure from physical and social aspects
- show ability to with a comprehensive view take into account, relevant scientific, social, esthetical and ethical aspects into judgement
Contents
The course is about the basics in urban design and urban quality. It deals with urban theories, the building structure in cities, and sustainable urban development.
