Aim
The aim of the course is to deepen the student’s knowledge and understanding for planning strategies for sustainable urban and rural development. The aim is also to develop advanced proficiency in designing long-term sustainable urban and rural environments from a social and humanistic perspective.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to develop and value aims, notions and methods within the urban landscape

• be able to analyse the urban landscape and the interplay with surrounding areas and the city as a whole

• be able to identify and describe strategies for sustainable development in city and region

• be able to analyse and describe existing urban landscapes

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• develop a strategy for sustainable urban and regional development on different planning levels

• design plans with different detailing for both region and partial area

• value the interplay between buildings, infrastructure, urban structure and region in social and humanistic context

• value and estimate the social and cultural consequences for interplay between public and private spheres

• value local measures in relation to regional strategies

• orally and visually communicate ones project

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• value urban structure from physical and social aspects

• show ability to with a comprehensive view take into account relevant scientific, social, esthetical and ethical aspects in judgements

• take consideration to the interplay between people and the physical environment

• show ability to base the work on the demand for long-term and functional solutions with high quality and good design

Contents
In an introductory phase the comprehensive environmental goals for building development are introduced. In your chosen area the existing situation and development tendencies are studied. From this analysis, a comprehensive strategy for future building development is formulated, and in the following phase an area is studied into detail. In different phases sustainable development, the landscape and the green structure is studied. You formulate a comprehensive program for the whole studied area (the region) and the course concludes in a suggestion to a comprehensive plan for this area.
