INDUSTRIALISED BUILDING

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: UG. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Optional for: A4, V4ib. Course coordinator: Professor Anders Ekholm, Anders.Ekholm@caad.lth.se, Projekteringsmetodik. Prerequisites: 3rd year at the A or V programmes. Recommended prerequisits: Or equivalent. The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 10. Selection criteria: Credits awarded or credited within the study programme. Assessment: 80% precence at lectures and exercises, passed essay. Further information: The course is part of the final year specialization of the V program in industrialised building starting fall 2007. The course is also adapted to the A programme and allows both A and V students to jointly attend the course. Home page: http://www.caad.lth.se.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to describe the development of industrialised building in a historical and societal perspective, as well as its contemporary development including the ideas of Lean Construction.
be able to describe the main characteristics of industrialised building, including the relation between processes and actors in product development, production and building projects.
be able to exemplify products and systems for industrialised building, and the requirements these put on design and production.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

in writing be able to analyse and describe processes, products and systems for industrialised building.
in writing be able to analyse and describe the relations between actors in product development and production in industrialised building.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to estimate if and why an industrialised building process may be suitable for a given building project.

Contents
The course presents the industrialisation of the building process in a historical and contemporary perspective with emphasis on house building. Industrialised Building with its directions like Systems building, Lean Construction and Supply Chain Management is discussed and assessed for different project categories. Differences between industrialised and traditional building is discussed. The relations between product development for a process and product platform and the building design process, as well as control of the processes are discussed. In a group work a case study is carried out with the objective to assess and characterise the degree of industrialisation in a current building project. The results are presented in exercises and an essay.
