Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• Understand and be able to explain the structure and principles of the building process – sub processes, activities, stages, required actors, organisation, and cooperation with users.

• Understand and be able to explain similarities and differences of traditional and industrialised building processes.

• Understand and be able to explain different contractual arrangements for a building project concerning applicability in different situations, as well as having knowledge of the sector’s need for changed contractual arrangements, and some “new” arrangements like partnering and lean construction.

• Understand and be able to explain the roles and tasks of the project and design management in according to the ISO 10006 standard for project management.

• Understand methods and existing types of time planning for building projects.

• Understand methods for cost calculation, budgeting and economical control of investment costs for annual costs and profitability calculation for building projects.

• Understand and be able to explain the contents of documents in different stages of the project.

• Understand the need for ICT-support in the project.

• Have knowledge of the most important legislation, regulation and norms the affect the building project.

• Have general knowledge of the ISO 9001 quality standard and the ISO 14001 environmental protection standard, and understand the methodology for quality and environmental control in building projects.

• Have general knowledge of the contents of contractual arrangements according to ABK 96 and the disposition of a consultancy contract.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to propose a suitable contractual arrangements for the building project.

• Be able to propose a suitable organisation for the building project.

• Be able to make a simple main time plan for a building project.

• Be able to make a simple simple budget for a building project.

• Be able to make a simple profitability calculation for a building project.

• Be able to make a simple consultancy contract.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to discuss and communicate about the building process, and project and design management, using adequate terminology and concepts.

• Be able to present and discuss a given issue in a seminar task of 1-2 pages.

Contents
The course analyses and describes the building process and the cooperation between different professional roles and focuses on how the design process can be directed and controlled by the design management. The course includes the following for the design manager important elements:

• The design process with brief development and design issues

• The construction process with implementation forms, professional roles and decision points

• Design and project management organisation

• Project planning

• Legislation

• Cooperation and communication

• Cooperation between commissioner and users

• Quality and environmental control

• Project networks and CAD coordination

• Calculation, budgeting and cost control
