Aim
The aim of the course is to ensure that each student becomes competent to re-build and/or add to existing buildings among those that already exist and are sensitive. He or she shall also be able to discuss and analyze qualities in giving a form to renewal, and to become competent to preserve and renew culture-historical built-up areas and acquire a good ability to plan.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to understand and apply central concepts in communicating and discussing developmental and design ideas about restoration and renewal of culture-historical built-up areas

• be able to develop projects for restoration and renewal of existing architecture that is sensitive

• understand and analyze culture-historical values and functional and technical conditions as a basis for planning renewal

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to make impact studies of proposals for change that take account of culture-historical, technical and aesthetic values

• be able to develop projects with technical, aesthetic, and functional values

• be able to investigate and understand these qualities as exhibited by culture-historical buildings and/or in built-up areas

• to think in an innovative way and to be more creative

• use modern techniques

• be able to present proposals to change or renew such buildings and/or built-up areas

• be skilled in thinking critically, in resolving problems independently, in arguing convincingly

• work alone and in groups

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to apply the Swedish authorities’ demands for care when changing and/or renewing a building or a whole built-up area

• be able to see a building and the process of changing it as a whole with respect to factors that include but are not limited to health, the environment, climate, security and access by physically-handicapped persons

Contents
Concerning culture-historical buildings, the course gives knowledge and understanding of and training in giving form to encounters between new and old architecture. It focuses on the functions, designs, material, maintenance and renewal of these buildings, and its training is also in how to adapt such buildings to contemporary requirements for function, technical equipment, design and access by physically-handicapped persons. Relevant Swedish legislation, international charters and demands for care in re-building are also examined.

The course includes the following parts.

• Preliminary investigations.

• Modern methods of surveying and determining damage.

• Capacity analysis and culture-historical evaluation.

• Outlines and reference studies.

• Impact studies and proposals for remedies.

• Descriptions of buildings, detailed drawings, samples of coloration, paints and other materials.

• Modern projection methods of presentation.

• The Swedish authorities’ rules for changing existing buildings, international organizations and their codes.
