URBAN DEVELOPMENT

ABV060

Higher education credits: 4,5. Grading scale: UG. Level: G2 (First level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Compulsory for: A3. Optional for: L4su, V4tp. Course coordinator: Professor Mats Edström, mats.edstrom@byggark.lth.se, Bebyggelsevård. The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 10. Assessment: During the course, constant reference is made to individuals levels of knowledge: each gives a preliminary account of his or her work-in-process on a project that is assessed. At the end of the course, each gives in words, drawings and images a final account of this project that the other students assess critically. Successfully to complete the course, a student must attend not less than eighty per cent of the lectures and study visits; actively take part in practical drawing-office work and preliminary and final assessments; and gain approval for his or her project. Aim
The course aims to give knowledge of, and an ability to discuss, urban development, its architectural values, qualities and values to be conserved in units of architecture and the environment, as well as the architecture of what can be built on vacant urban sites.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

understand how new architecture is adapted to old
understand and analyse the functional and technical state of, and culture-historical values of old architecture as the basis for planning its renewal

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to evaluate the starting points of ideas that originally informed existing buildings
give form to the encounter between their architecture and what is proposed as new
investigate and understand their functional, technical and aesthetical qualities
be able to use modern techniques of presentation
be able to argue convincingly in favour of and if necessary defend his or her opinions
have developed his or her abilities to think creatively and critically, and independently to resolve problems

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able, in relation to the architectural quality of and needs for renewal of a given building, to evaluate present preconditions conserving and renewing it

Contents
The course addresses the history of urban development with the aim of identifying temporal periods and preservation qualities. Its principal themes are: to make an inventory of and evaluate buildings of culture-historical value that are worth conserving; different opinions about deliberately planned change; the architecture of change; gentrification and other renewals; and the theory and practice of the architecture of vacant urban sites. Each student shall also prepare one or more architectural proposals for a proposed or putative building.
