Aim
The course provides fundamental knowledge of the physical planning in social structure construction with focus on the infrastructure, and GIS as a supporting feature in the planning process.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
Have fundamental knowledge of the relevant legislation
Have fundamental knowledge of the possibilities for physical planning offered by GIS-analyses
Contents

The main features of the planning process on national, regional and local levels and the interaction of the various levels and actors. Responsibility for the physical planning. The main features of the physical plannings system of rules.
Bases, tools and implementation.
Fundamental concepts of cartography and GIS.
How information in the database can be connected to the cartographic information, illustrated and analysed with the help of maps and geographic information systems.
The course contents are applied to a real planning project, combined with a study trip. Teaching/learning is through tasks both individual and in groups and with exercises at the end of lectures. Also included is a GIS exercise with a practical application to the project.
Exercises must be compiled into a final report giving an account of the whole planning process.
