ARCHITECTURE AND SOCIETY: TECTONICS & SPACE

Higher education credits: 6. Grading scale: UG. Level: A (Second level). Language of instruction: The course will be given in English on demand. Optional for: A4. Course coordinator: Assistant Professor Bernt Nilsson, Bernt.Nilsson@arkitektur.lth.se, Inst för arkitektur och byggd miljö. The course might be cancelled if the numer of applicants is less than 5. Assessment: Approved exercises, approved final presentation and 80% presence at seminars and lectures.

Aim
To give an understanding of tectonic meanings in architecture and understanding for the construction as a means of expressing space and aesthetic.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to describe how the construction has relevance for the aesthetic expression.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

show in models, drawings and text how a certain building is made and the thought behind in relation to the specific spatial and tectonic quality.
be able to make models and drawings of high quality.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to consider the relevance of the material gathered

Contents
The course is built up from the study of some buildings with legible and interesting tectonic characteristics. The buildings are discussed in lectures, seminars and in the practical work. The buildings are from different historical periods to describe common phenomenon in architecture.
